The 1985 Block Island 40 represents the very first year of the Mark III production run, a historic milestone where the legendary 1957 Bill Tripp design was beautifully modernized by Eric Woods of Migrator Yachts. Built with contemporary composite materials while retaining its iconic classic yawl rig and centerboard configuration, the 1985 model stands out as a highly capable, heavy-displacement pocket-maritime cruiser designed for serious offshore sailing.
Key SpecificationsDesign & Architecture;
Originally drawn by William Tripp Jr.; modified and re-engineered in 1984–1985 by Migrator Yachts using stronger, modern vinylester/polyester resin layups.
Dimensions: LOA: 40.75 ft | LWL: 28.00 ft | Beam: 11.00 ftDraft flexibility: Min Draft: 4' 2" (Board Up) | Max Draft: 8' 10" (Board Down), featuring a modernized, hydrodynamic lead-ballasted centerboard.Displacement & Ballast: 20,000 lbs displacement with 7,800 lbs of internal lead ballast ensuring a remarkably stable, sea-kindly motion.
Sail Area: 736 sq ft split-rig sail plan, highly praised for ease of balancing in heavy weather (the classic "jigger and mule" configuration).
- The Cabin Trunk Extension: The cabin house was lengthened fore and aft. This design change allowed for a dedicated, proper U-shaped galley and a fully seated navigation station—both of which were missing in earlier generations.
- Interior Joinery: Below deck, the hull is finished in rich, premium wood tones—typically featuring an ash ceiling, teak-faced marine plywood, and louvered locker doors.
- Offshore Layout: The layout offers a secure V-berth forward, a private head, a spacious salon with convertible settees, and an offshore-safe quarter berth near the companionway. A watertight bulkhead isolates the main cabin from the deep forepeak anchor locker.
